Cheruthuruthy
Cheruthuruthy, a beautiful Valluvanad village lies on the banks of
Bharathapuzha.Cheruthuruthy is famous as the home of
Kerala Kalamandalam, the State's flag-ship training school for Kathakali
dance,drama and other indigenous perfoming arts of Kerala. Nowadays, it is also
home for the Kerala film industry.The people are
innocent and very friendly like any other village.
The nearest main railway station Shoranur is just 2.5km away.It lies on the
State Highway No. 21.There is a small railway station at Vallathol Nagar itself
just opposite to the Kerala Kalamandalam. It is worth a visit !
This enchanting village of varied cultural art forms, is located at 32 kms from
Trichur and 47 km from Palghat. The waters of Bharatapuzha (known as River Nila)
enrich this culturally rich hamlet.

Kalamandalam : Started in 1927,one of the most revered places for
the traditional art forms of Kerala, the Kalamandalam is the cradle of Kathakali
training in India.This is the place where you can experience a perfect synergy
of dance, drama and music. The colourful dancers of Kathakali, the gorgeous
maidens of Mohiniyattam, the performers of the semi-classical dance form,
Thullal, the actors of the Sanskrit drama, Koodiyattam and the musicians of
Panchavadyam enthrall you here and they make a profound impact in your hearts.
This empire of performing arts was founded by the great poet Vallathal Narayana Menon.The Kalaries (class rooms) the Photo Gallery
and a wide collection of video and audio cassettes covering the various
performances and concerts, are not be missed by the spectators.
Foreigners can avail of the short term courses offered by Kalamandalam as part
of International cultural exchange.
The Old Kalamandalam, situated on the banks
of the Nila river(Bharathapuzha), is the place of
Vallathol Samadhi.Poet Vallathol's house, situated near old Kalamandalam has
been reformed into a museum called 'Vallathol Museum.
Koothambalam :
The Koothambalam - the traditional dance theatre - at Kalamandalam is the only
one in the State which is built outside a temple complex.The theatre is 14.62 m
long and 7.31m wide.The pillars are made of granite and on them carvings of
dance postures. On the walls there are exhilarating paintings from the
festivals and events, the spectators are comfortably placed on the wooden
platform and the carpet-spread over.
Special performance on Kathakali and other dance forms are conducted on the
following days without any fee, January 26th, March 13th, August 15th, September
18th and November 9th.
